The Atlanta Voice Profiles N. John Bey Becoming the Third Black President of the American Association for Justice
Bey & Associates founder N. John Bey spoke with The Atlanta Voice about his new role as president of the American Association for Justice (AAJ), the organization’s third Black president in its 80-year history. AAJ is the world’s largest organization of plaintiff trial lawyers. They promote justice and fairness for those injured, safeguard victims’ rights, and strengthen the civil justice system through education and disclosure of information critical to public health and safety.
John was sworn in this past July at AAJ’s annual convention in Chicago. Before becoming president, he chaired AAJ’s Membership Oversight, National College of Advocacy (NCA) and Continuing Legal Education (CLE) committees, and through those roles helped grow AAJ’s membership and expand its educational resources.
In his new role, N. John wants to give more lawyers across the country the skills they need to protect the public and defend the Seventh Amendment, which protects the right to a jury trial in certain federal civil cases. He also plans to strengthen AAJ by developing more effective trial lawyers and building a more engaged, connected membership.
“We are working to make the world a safer and better place for everyone in it. My commitment during this presidency is to protect the jury system and the Seventh Amendment. That is the only access you have to real change,” John told The Atlanta Voice.
