Congratulations to the Winner of Our Fall 2018 Scholarship!

All of the lawyers and staff members at Bey & Associates, LLC are dedicated to helping our local and nationwide communities build strong foundations that can enable us to take part in a brighter future. We decided to start a scholarship in 2017 that would give us the ability to help college students forge that strong foundation. The scholarship’s last submission period, Fall 2018, recently came to a close. We were truly humbled by the amount of applications we received as well as the exceptional high quality of every essay. All of the essays were outstanding. Choosing just one winner was difficult!

We’re pleased to announce we’ve chosen a winner.

Congratulations to Paris Pippen of Monroe, Georgia!

Paris will be attending Fort Valley State University and is studying to become a physician.

This submission period’s essay topic was on a single change that the applicant would make to find permanent homes for our nation’s homeless population.

Here’s her winning essay:

Open Arms

When we think of individuals that are represented in this nation, we can further classify them as the upper, middle and lowerclassmen.  In today’s world mostly everyone has adapted to the “selfish” lifestyle, but there are some cheerful givers that still care about others and choose to give back to their community. The poverty/homeless level of the nation is beginning to rise, yet not many people want to do anything to help decrease those levels.  Not only are homeless people are shunned, but they are treated horribly by many.  They are often taunted and laughed at and not helped.

I often ask myself two questions, “why are their homeless people in the world?”  Personally I think there can be many reasons why a person can be homeless whether its lack of funds, they have a disability or maybe an addiction that they may struggle with. The homeless are looked over and judged everyday because of their appearance. I disagree with judging people no matter how they are seen in the world’s eye view.  The person that’s being judged may be going through a life changing situation that they can’t overcome without receiving help of others.

Secondly, I often ask myself “why do people just pass by the homeless on the side of the street and not bother to help them? “. As I briefly researched, I found out that approximately 17 people experience homelessness per every 10,000 people in a general population. The statistics I mentioned not only includes adults, it includes children also. No child should have to worry about where their next meal will come from, if they have to wear the same pair of clothes every day, if they have water to drink, where they will live, or wonder if they will be able to do daily needs like: bathing or brushing their teeth because of the lack of resources.

If I could make a single change that would help our nation’s homeless population find a place that they can call homes I would start a program called “Open Arms” This program would provide homes, healthcare, assistance for the disabled and educational services for everyone.  This program will also help the homeless find stable jobs so they will never have to encounter being homeless again. I would make sure the recipients are given a second chance at life, by not making sure no one is discriminated against.  Also, I would guarantee that each and every individual receives the type of assistance that they need.

“Why would this program be effective to the homeless community” This program would be very beneficial because it will help provide services that aren’t always offered at homeless shelters which will separate my program from any other programs that may already exist.  I believe that everyone deserves a second chance, and by helping the homeless will be edifying and will give them a great opportunity to thrive.  Many people fail to realize that majority of the homeless aren’t homeless by choice and they deserve to be treated like humans!  Hopefully by having a place to live and stable employment, these individuals will never have to worry about the daily necessities of life.  This program will be very important to the nationally because it will decrease the homeless population tremendously.

Subsequently, I will like to make sure my program is expanded to everyone in the United States.  I would like for the expansion to include every city and state in the nation.  Some homeless people feel uncomfortable seeking help because they may feel as if they will be turned down because of their circumstances, but my program will assure that no one will be left behind. I am sure that giving the homeless permanent homes and resources will not only benefit their lives, but encourage many others to help decrease poverty and get homeless people off the streets. Furthermore, through this effort the world will also be a better place for us all to live in.
