Garret DeReus is a tenacious and dedicated civil rights and personal injury attorney with a proven record of litigation on behalf of individuals whose rights have been violated. Garret has spent his career at the forefront of litigation involving disability rights, police misconduct, prisoner rights, personal injury, and wrongful death. Garret handles complex cases from intake through trial and appeal. He has successfully argued before the Fifth and Tenth Circuits. He helped secure landmark consent judgments against the New Orleans Regional Transit Authority and the City of New Orleans. Garret has first-chaired multiple trials and countless hearings. Over the course of his career, Garret has negotiated more than 300 settlements, consent decrees, and consent judgments on behalf of his clients. Community Engagement
Garret is committed to expanding access to justice and fostering systemic change both inside and outside the courtroom. He serves as a faculty member for Tulane Law School’s Trial Advocacy program, mentoring the next generation of litigators. He has collaborated with nonprofits on impact litigation, and he actively participates in the Disability Rights Bar Association and the National Police Accountability Project to support colleagues nationwide.
